Take the Significance Assessment

This was my first experience owning a rental property, and I learned a lot through the process of buying it, adding value, and eventually selling. It gave me practical lessons in ownership and growth, and I hope to acquire another property in the very near future.

This is what it look like when I bought it.

I chose the paint colors and did the painting myself. I hired a contractor to expand the kitchen and install drywall, then I finished the space. A team of electricians added the ceiling fan since there had been no light fixture in the room, and my real estate agent handled the staging.

I installed the lights, updated the cabinet pulls, and painted both the walls and cabinets. I also laid down the stick-on flooring my realtor picked out. This space has come a long way for sure.

In the bathroom, I installed the shower tile and laid the same stick-on vinyl flooring used in the kitchen for a consistent look. I updated the mirror, painted the walls and cabinet, and had a plumber replace the tub and shower fixture.
Prior to getting this investment property, I didn’t realize construction was in my DNA. My grandfather was a painter, his brother a builder, yet I grew up focused on music. I really wanted to play sports, but I didn’t have the support for that, so I leaned into music instead. I played double bass for over 11 years, earned awards, and never knew how much I also enjoyed painting and design. If I had connected those dots earlier, who knows where it might have led.
I followed the path my dad wanted, putting on the white collar shirt, working in an office, and earning my highest salary, but I felt the least fulfilled. The moment I turned a real estate “before” into an “after,” I came alive. Looking back, I see those hidden talents were more than passions. They were tools that could provide for my family and connect legacy across generations.
These pictures remind me that gifts often run deeper than we realize. The question is not whether a 9 to 5 is wrong, but whether we are truly connected to the legacies before us and the ones we are shaping for those who come after.
